The Importance of Carpet Cleaning
Why Regular Cleaning is Necessary
People don’t think twice about regularly cleaning the clothes to keep them clean, fresh and hygienic. However, carpets and upholstered furniture also needs periodic cleaning for the very same reasons.
Over a series of years your carpets will accumulate a build up of soil, grit, hair, human excrement (you get the idea). Another big problem of not regularly vacuuming and cleaning your carpets are dust mites.
Even though you can see some dirt and dust on the surface of your carpet, the vast majority of the dirt is ingrained within the carpet fibres (hidden). Some believe upto 85% is unseen and lurking underneath the carpet pile.
Regular professional cleaning can ensure:
- Increased life expectancy – This might be a pretty bold statement. However, by regularly vacuuming and having your carpets cleaned periodically will help ensure the life of your carpets.
- Stain Removal – It’s quite funny what most clients do all around the country that are similar to each other. They generally tend to get their carpets cleaned when they are having an inspection from their landlord or letting agent or if they are having family or friends over to stay. Whatever the reason, having your carpets professionally cleaned can eliminate those stubborn stains, marks and dried in spillage.
- A more hygienic environment – You may have small children or even pets. Removal of built-up soil and debris will help protect them.
- Improved appearance – Even if you have really old carpets. Having them professionally cleaned can help improve the overall appearance and bring them back to life.
- Elimination of mites and bacteria – Eliminating them helps with reducing the risk of allergies, mould and other potential problems.
- Deodorisation – This is a major reason why professional carpet cleaners get called out. People can either smell their own carpets or worse somebody has told them that their carpets smell. Having them professionally cleaned will (in most case) remove that horrible smell and offer specialist treatments to ensure a fresh, clean smelling carpet.
Vacuuming Is Not Enough
Vacuuming your carpets regularly is really important. Not only will this help remove dust it also helps remove dust mites. However, most vacuum cleaners don’t have a rotating brush. This is critical! Not having a rotating brush at the bottom of your vacuum cleaner really means that you are only removing things from the surface of the carpet fibres.
Additionally, you can have your carpets cleaned by a professional who will not only vacuum your carpets properly, they will apply powerful but safe chemicals that help with cleaning process. The machine they use will also apply hot water and steam that kills dust mites, bacteria and any other nasties lurking in your carpet.
The Importance Of Gutter Cleaning
When was the last time you had your guttering checked?
To be fair, we very rarely think about the gutters on our home (too many things going on in life we suppose). In essence they’re “out of sight and out of mind”.
They may seem pretty insignificant. However, your gutters actually pay quite a considerable role in the structural integrity of your home. By keeping them clear and clean you are actually avoiding potentially expensive repairs in the long run.
A gutter system’s primary job is to guide the rainwater from your roof away from your walls and into the drain below. They do this with ease and with little disturbance to your daily life.
You generally only think about them if something goes wrong (i.e. they become clogged and full of debris, a leak or worse still, you start seeing damp appearing on both the inside and outside of your wall. This can sometimes result in structural damage if it isn’t fixed quickly.
It doesn’t really matter what they your gutters are made out of. In the vast majority of cases they are plastic, but often times they are cast iron or steel. Insurance companies recommend that your gutters are cleared or cleaned annually so that they can perform properly and also to avoid costly gutter repairs in the future.
What causes damaged or blocked gutters?
If you have your gutters cleared and cleaned regularly then they’ll be far less susceptible to long-term damage. Blocked gutters simply cause damage. The most common issues are blockages in the gutters and another popular reason is a blockage in the downpipe.
A lot of people think that the blockage in the downpipe goes all the way down the pipe and this might be true in a few cases. However, what we’ve found is that the blockage is simply at the top of the downpipe with very few debris actually growing down the pipe (they generally grow upwards like most plants do). That’s why you can sometimes see small growths in the corner of your gutter system since this is where the downpipes are normally located.
blockage normally starts with debris like fallen leaves and moss from the roof or nearby trees
The blockage normally starts with debris like fallen leaves and moss from the roof or nearby trees. To check to see if they are blocked, take a walk outside when it’s raining and you can sometimes tell if the water is cascading over the gutters or worse still, running down the wall at the side of your house. If this is the case, nine times out of ten the gutters are probably blocked.
Another common fault is leaky gutter joints. This is the number one problem for isolated damp in homes across the UK. The debris gets caught in the joints or simply just wear and tear. If you’re experiencing damp in your property, it might be worth checking the gutters first before doing anything else. This is likely the cause of the problem.
We sometimes get called out for sagging gutters (where the gutters are not running level). Again, the main cause for this is a blockage in the gutter system. The weight isn’t just debris but standing water in the pipes that basically have nowhere to travel. Having the gutter cleaned annually will eliminate the vast majority of these problems before they occur. They will also indicate any problems that are likely to occur in the future.
How to fix damaged or blocked gutters
If you think that your gutters are damaged or blocked up. The first thing you need to do is call in a professional gutter cleaning specialist to advise you on the best steps to fix them. A lot of small cleaning companies now have a vacuum suction system (sucks the debris out of the gutters) which is fine. However, in most cases they will need to actually go up a ladder to inspect the problem more closely. It’s very hard to indicate serious problems (even with a camera system).
A professional will generally use thick protective gloves, a garden hose and scooping tool. In addition, the vacuum system is great for small blockages.
Ensure that they don’t use anything too sharp (especially if your gutters are made out of UPVC. This can cause future damage and costly repairs in the long run.
Once they identify where the blockage is, they’ll decide which tool to use to remove the debris from the gutter, either manually with a scoop or with gutter vac machine.
If the blockage is in the downpipe, they may be able to remove this with the machine, but in most cases the debris is far too big and entangled to do this. In most cases they need to remove this with the use of a long ladder to physically and manually remove this.
If the joints are leaking, the vast majority of gutter cleaners won’t be able to repair them. Your best bet is to call in a roofing company to carry out the repairs as some sections of the guttering may need to be replaced. Sometimes they repair by applying a sealant or simply just swap out the old joint for a new one.
Is there a long-term solution to guttering maintenance?
It is recommended to have your gutters cleaned at least once a year. Most companies will actually schedule this is for you. However, it might be handy to just write it on your calendar or diary for the following year.
best time to gut the gutters cleaned is just before winter or in the spring
The best time to gut the gutters cleaned is just before winter. This is basically after autumn when most of the leaves from the trees have fallen and before the bad weather starts. It’s incredibly hard to remove frozen debris from your gutters in the winter, so ensure you get them done beforehand. This reduce the chance of them becoming blocked later on in the year.
If you can’t get them cleaned before winter, then the best time is in the spring (at least have them checked). Gutters can sometimes be damaged from strong winds or heavy snowfall over the winter.
If you live in a neighbourhood that’s surrounded by trees, getting blocked gutters is pretty much inevitable. You can install gutter guard systems and hedgehog type systems.
Each cleaning company has different recommendations and are purely subjective to the house that they are maintaining. Ask your gutter cleaner for further advice as the clearance of your gutters to the roof overhang might be too tight to have these sort of systems.
In some cases they still need clearing, even if you have gutter protector in place. It all depends on the sort of gutters you have.
